Everyone wants to be successful in their talents. In dance, it is difficult to measure successes unless we have given our self a goal or definition of what that success is for ourselves. When we have a measuring tool, you might find yourself hitting some bumpy roads on the way. How can we keep ourselves on the right track?

Stop Making Comparisons

Not only can we be our own worst critics, we often compare ourselves to others and really get into some negative self-talk. Every person is an individual with unique talents and circumstances, there is not one person who is exactly like you, so how can you try to be exactly like someone else? If another person inspires you to improve that’s great, but try to be the better version of you.

Be Kind to Yourself

Think about the things you are telling yourself. Would you say those things to your best friend? How would you lift your friend up when they need some encouragement? When we tell ourselves negative things it is taking us off the road to succeed and putting barriers in our path. Be kind to yourself instead of being critical. Use the pep talk you reserve for your friends for yourself.

Focus on the Positive

Look at how far you have come, not how much further you have to get there. You accomplish something every time you make an effort. A quote by Conrad Hilton reads “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they Don’t Quit.” In other words: KEEP TRYING AND NEVER GIVE UP!

Remember, life is about learning, experiencing and growing. “Success is if the person you are today is better than the person you were yesterday.” ~anonymous

Good luck and remember you CAN reach your goals!
